The journey of a horse theatre, Zingaro
Based on the name of the founder Bartabas’ horse, Zingaro, the theatre group that consisted of men performing alongside horses was formed in 1984, the group was named as Theatre Zingaro that showed the founder’s liking for his companion horse as well as the inclination towards acting. Once established Zingaro came up with its first performance called Cabaret equestre, a huge hit in those days it fared very well in the French region. Their performance was an extravaganza of colours flaunted by the dancers, actors, musicians and most importantly the horses which formed the integral part of the performance group. Along with the novelty in the way of presentation Theatre Zingaro also brought along the element of poetic verses and the flow of music, this not only assisted in the coordination of the performers but also added value to the person’s view. More than anything else with the help of all these tools the performances were able to relate to the relationship that existed among men and horses and moreover the evolution of this entire relation.
The group has performed in various location throughout Europe as well as many destination across the Americas have been covered, Zingaro also has to its credit performances in front of the Turkish crowds when they performed in Istanbul a couple of years ago. Bartabas has also made two decently successful movies inspired by what he saw around him. With the increasing number of theatre groups the quality of performances are deteriorating but since there is a group like Zingaro the viewers across the globe can expect to see some fascinating acts and also a lot of quality and diversity in the content part of the performance. Theatre Zingaro has come way from being a French theatre group to an internationally known and acclaimed theatre group.

  1. I remember a performance of Zingaro in NY where the singers were from Rajastan in India. Is there any video or audio recording of this?
